Cuddles the Crocodile

Cuddles, a juvenile West African Dwarf Crocodile, was brought in to see Dean Felkler from our exotics department after another crocodile had bitten his back leg. Cuddles was limping on his leg which had swollen up and was clearly uncomfortable. The patient was immediately given strong pain relief and a course of antibiotics. X-rays were taken of his bad leg and unfortunately a fracture was located in his femur (thigh bone).

To obtain a better 3D picture of the break Dean took Cuddles to be CT scanned at Optivet referrals. This gave Ben Trimmer one of our orthopaedic surgeons all the information required to plan his approach pre-surgery. The duo performed the fracture repair by screwing a metal plate into the femur to stabilise and provide good apposition of the fracture site.

Cuddles was seen the next week for a check-up consultation with Dean where he displayed a drastic improvement. In fact, he was using his leg as if nothing had happened. Luckily crocodiles spend vast amount of their time basking under their heat sources or buoyant in water which allows sufficient resting of fracture repairs. Much easier than those bouncy Labradors we see.
