August is the Barnham clinic's month to choose one of our patients for pet of the month  ...we all instantly thought of Frankie to be our Star Pet. 

Frankie is a handsome Doberman who is nearly 9 years old. In August 2010 he was diagnosed with Lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymph nodes. The first signs of Lymphoma is an enlargement of most, or all of the Lymph nodes, normally the ones under the chin, in the neck and in the back legs.

We took a Fine needle aspirate biopsy of the enlarged lymph nodes in Frankie, which involved inserting a small needle into the node to get a tiny sample of cells that could be analysed by an external laboratory.  In Frankie's case this unfortunately confirmed that he has Lymphoma.  He was
started on a combination of tablets and a Chemotherapy drug that is administered intravenously and monitored with blood tests, to try to reduce the size of the nodes and reduce the progression of the cancer.

Frankie is a lovely dog, but is a little bit of a Mummy's boy! He still comes in weekly for his Chemotherapy, where we have to insert a small catheter into a vein in his front leg.  Frankie doesn't seem to worry about this at all, but once it is over he can't wait to get back to his Mum, and of course has to have treats before and after. His owner gives him his tablet medication at home and I think spoils him quite a bit too!! Although it can be quite an emotional rollercoaster at times for his owner, Frankie has done so well on his treatment and is still enjoying life.

So as a tribute to Frankie and his Mum, we have decided to make him Barnham's Star Pet.
